The Ownership Contract by Sadie the Yorkipoo

We humans are in the enviable position of being able to pick the perfect pet for ourselves. We can go to a shelter, store, or breeder and pick out the perfect animal that looks friendly or smart or adorable or dependable, basing our decisions on whatever qualities are most important to us. As the anniversary of Sadie’s Gotcha Day approaches, I find myself thinking about what would happen if the animals got to pick their human instead. I imagined Sadie holding interviews for possible owner candidates, and decided that, if given the chance, she would require her new owner to sign a contract before she agreed to go home with them.

So, in honor of Sadie’s Gotcha Day, which was three years ago tomorrow, I present the Ownership Contract written by Sadie the Yorkipoo:

On this, the 21st day of July in the year 2012, I, Sadie the Yorkipoo, am listing my terms for entering into a dog-owner relationship with Mary DiTosto. The following terms are non-negotiable, and any deviation from said terms will void this contract.

  1. Sadie will be given a new toy every day of her life, with the option of additional new toys for good behavior, special occasions, etc.
  2.

  3. Sadie will be granted first choice of sleeping and siting areas; i.e. she will choose her preferred spot on the couch or bed and all humans will adapt to her choice.
  4.

  5. All food belongs to Sadie. She will eat her fill from your plate and then allow you to enjoy the leftovers. In addition, a dog treat must be promptly provided upon request, no exceptions.
  6.

  7. If Sadie decides an object is hers, she may have it without complaint. Objects include, but are not limited to, shoes, socks, slippers, clothing, stuffed animals, pillows, etc.
  8.

  9. Sadie will be let outside promptly when asked, no matter the time or the weather.
  10.

  11. Sadie reserves the right to add future provisions, which will be binding when signed as an addendum to this contract.

I, Mary DiTosto, hereby agree to abide by the following terms in exchange for the privilege of owning the Yorkipoo named Sadie.

Mary DiTosto

Does Your Dog Have a Driver’s License Yet?

Sadie is super excited today because her driver’s license just arrived in the mail! She immediately ran and grabbed my car keys, ready to put her new license to use. She even got behind the wheel of the car! Unfortunately for Sadie, this new license doesn’t really allow her to drive. It’s actually a cute new type of dog ID tag from DoggieID.com.

The state license ID tag is a whimsical alternative to the traditional dog tag. It looks just like a miniature license from the state of your choice. Personally I was very tempted to order a Hawaiian license tag for Sadie, because the rainbow design makes Hawaii’s licenses the prettiest of the 50 states. But Sadie and I live in New Jersey, so in the end we ordered the New Jersey ID tag. We’ve already received quite a few compliments during our walks from other dog owners amused by this unique style of ID tag.

The tag itself is small enough to fit comfortably on my little dog, but can be read easily. It feels like laminated plastic, so it should be reasonably durable but won’t make the annoying, jangling sounds of metal tags. And it comes with not only the standard key ring to attach to your dog’s collar, but with a mini carabiner clip, so you easily move it from one collar to another. Each Doggie ID tag is made in the USA and is backed by a lifetime guarantee.

The state license dog ID tags are available for $18.95 from DoggieID.com. I think they make a pretty unique gift for the dog owner in your life and are even conveniently shipped in a little gift pouch. You can even win one right now using the form below! One winner will be randomly selected one week from today to win one free state license tag from Doggie ID!

Sadie the Werewolf

On this Black & White Sunday, just a few short days before Halloween, I’ve got a picture for you of Sadie showing off her pearly white teeth. Something about this photo reminds me of old sci-fi/horror werewolf movies. She looks like the evil werewolf, standing on its hind legs, either about to attack or about to sneeze. I don’t know whether to be horrified or laugh.

The Battle

The other day at work, Sadie decided she was bored and needed to find some entertainment. That’s when she noticed some movement out of the corner of her eye. Sadie’s Grammy was bouncing her foot up and down while typing at the computer. Sadie looked around, determined the coast was clear, and made her move. Before anyone could even blink, Sadie had launched herself out from under my desk and grabbed onto that bouncing slipper. A tense battle ensued, with Grammy desperately trying to hold on to her slipper, and Sadie equally determined to steal it. You can see who won.

Pouting

Last week, my poor little Sadie went into pouting mode, so of course I grabbed my camera. Once a month, on flea and tick medication day, Sadie gets all pouty. First, she hates being force fed her heartworm pill. Second, I put medicine down her back that seems to feel icky and wet, but just won’t come off. And Sadie tries very hard to make it come off. Which leads to the last and worst offense of all, I make Sadie wear her pajamas. Because she runs around the house trying to rub off her flea and tick medication on any surface she can rub against, I make her wear pjs to try and keep the medicine off the furniture and on her back. I think she looks absolutely adorable in her pajamas, but Sadie disagrees. As soon as I put them on her, she stands exactly where I place her and refuses to move. I always try to give her a treat for putting up with the medication, but Sadie won’t even take the treat, let alone eat it. My dog basically turns into a mannequin displaying dog pajamas. So I have to pick her up and carry her to the bed, where she lies completely still and spends the rest of the night pouting. As soon as the pjs come off, Sadie is immediately alive again. She zooms off to drink water and find that treat she rejected earlier. I always feel bad about the pouting, but luckily it seems I’m always forgiven, until next month comes around.
