Reindeer Games

This holiday season I’ve decided to switch out Sadie’s living room dog bed with a more festive reindeer dog bed. At first Sadie wasn’t sure she liked her new reindeer bed. She didn’t really want to sleep in it or lay in it. But one day as she was looking for a good place to bury a treat, she discovered a much better use for her new dog bed. Between the side bumpers and the bottom cushion of the bed is a little space that is perfect for hiding things! Thankfully Sadie is not the kind of dog that likes to hide other people’s belongings, so aside from her treats, Sadie had only one item in mind for her new hiding spot – her little squeaky soccer balls.

It’s now become a daily game for Sadie and I to play, which I call the reindeer game. When Sadie gets in the mood to play, she squeaks her ball for a while and then runs and places it in her reindeer bed. If I’m not paying attention, she then whines until I come over to do my part. I stuff the ball firmly in the crevice of the reindeer bed and then flip the bed over. Sadie immediately starts digging into the underside of the bed. She knows she has to get her reindeer flipped back over to get the ball out, but sometimes she just enjoys the digging for a bit. Then she head butts the bed until she gets the right leverage to flip it. Once the reindeer is right side up again, Sadie can then dig her ball out and start all over again. Take a look at the videos below to see the reindeer game in action!

Trouble

In this photo my little troublemaker has gotten her paws on a sock someone carelessly left on the floor. On her nose is piece of cheese that I was trying to use to distract her from the sock. As you can see, she is not planning on letting anyone or anything come between her and that sock.

Tissue Box Tower

As I looked around my living room last weekend, I noticed over a dozen tissue boxes lying on the floor. Before you start thinking I might be a secret hoarder, let me remind you that all of these tissue boxes belong to Sadie, as she uses them in her favorite game, Tissue Box Ball. She usually goes from box to box, playing with them one at a time. But on this particular day I decided to see if Sadie would like to play with all of her tissue boxes – at the same time. I took one of her squeaky balls and placed it in a random tissue box. Next I began stacking the tissue boxes one on top of the other to form a tower. Then I told Sadie to find her ball. She sniffed the tower, she barked at the tower, she ran from the tower, but eventually she worked up the courage to knock over the tower. After destroying several more towers throughout the weekend, Sadie perfected her method of handling a tissue box tower.

Step one involves barking at the tower, hoping it will fall down on its own.

Step two is to make sure the ball is actually hidden in the tower. Sadie would sniff the tower for the scent of her ball, and then sniff all over the rest of the living room just to make sure her ball wasn’t secretly hiding somewhere else.

Step three involves more barking, while circling the tower and checking for weaknesses.

In step four Sadie actually hits the tower with her paw and then jumps back, knocking down the tissue boxes without getting hit by them.

And finally, step five involves Sadie sniffing each fallen box looking for the one containing her beloved ball.
