Stop and Stair
Today on our way out of the office Sadie changed her normal routine. It wasn’t a big change, but it seemed really deliberate. It left me thinking for the rest of the day about whether she made a random, one time choice or if she actually learned from past experience and planned her actions accordingly.

New Toys or Old Toys?
So I’ve often heard other pet owners complaining that their pets will love a specific toy to death, no matter how old, dirty, and ragged it becomes. My friend’s cat, for example, will only play with one specific toy mouse. By now it’s falling apart, but whenever my friend tries to replace it with a new version of the same mouse, her cat refuses to play with it. Sadie has the opposite opinion about her toys. She loves getting a new toy, and usually plays with it excitedly for hours that first day. But once the toy is no longer new, Sadie loses interest in it. And by some method I don’t understand, Sadie can tell which toy is new and which is not, even if the toys are identical.
Is 28 Balls Too Many?
I found out this week that the pet store is discontinuing Sadie’s absolute favorite toy. Remember the squeaky basketball from my Squeaky Obsession posts? Sadie absolutely adores these squeaky balls, but only when they can squeak. Once she breaks the squeaker, the ball is dead to her and she goes looking for a new one. So to keep my pup happy, I wanted to have a stash of balls to give her a new one whenever she needs it.

A Preference For Pink?
One of the first things my best friend said when I told her I was getting a girl puppy was that she hopes the puppy likes pink. Pink is my absolute favorite color. If it comes in pink, I probably have it or want it. So it was easy to imagine that everything I’d buy for a new puppy would be pink whenever possible. And it’s true. All of Sadie’s leashes are pink, her harnesses are pink, her dog bowls, dog beds, and ever her poop baggies are pink. And something Sadie did recently makes me wonder if I’ve passed my preference for pink along to her.
