Today Sadie and I join Ruckus the Eskie‘s Sepia Saturday blog hop with a short message about kitchen safety. The kitchen is always an enticing place for your pet with yummy smells and family members in and out all the time. But the kitchen can also be a dangerous place for any animal. As with children, the stove poses a threat to animals. They could burn themselves on the oven, or stovetop if they can reach that high, or something hot could fall onto pets if they are too close. One of the most common behavioral issues dog owners have to deal with is jumping. Excited dogs jump on people, jump on furniture, and generally just jump for joy. To handle this issue, dog owners generally try to maintain a calm environment and impose boundaries for their pets. But my Sadie does not act like the typical dog. I actually have trouble encouraging her to jump. On most days, Sadie refuses to jump onto the couch, onto her window seat, onto the bed, etc. I’ve had to invest in a series of doggy stairs for key places in the house, such as the stairs to my bed pictured above. I guess the time has come for me to admit to my greatest failing as a dog mommy – my dog has no friends. Sadie is completely isolated from canine society.  I know this is mostly my fault because I didn’t bring her into situations where she could socialize often enough, but it’s also partly Sadie’s choice. I recently got Sadie a hula hoop to jump through for some fun exercise. We’re still getting the hang of it, but once we get going she has a blast. When I first take it out of the closet she is both curious and scared of it. If I hold it still, she will go up to it and sniff it. But the minute it moves she jumps back and barks at it. Thanks for liking us! Sadie and I really appreciate all the love!

Sadie is generally not an aggressive or growly dog, except in one specific circumstance: when she wants to do something she knows is bad. This usually involves her having a stuffed toy, pair of socks, or some other item made of fabric that she wants to chew up and eat, even though she knows this is not allowed. So Sadie tries to employ a technique I call the preemptive growl to get her way. In the photo above Sadie clearly has the ‘about to growl’ look on her face. Continue reading
