Red Nose Day Returns!

Sadie is excited to learn that Red Nose Day is back this year. The comedy telethon to benefit children’s charities takes place Thursday, May 26th. Last year Sadie modeled for everyone one of the Red Noses that are sold in support of Red Nose Day (click here to see those photos). This year Sadie got a springy Red Nose headband to go with her Red Nose.

An Authentic Cinco de Mayo

Sadie is ready to celebrate Cinco de Mayo today! And this year Sadie’s celebration will be a bit more authentic, because I brought back a few presents for Sadie from a trip I took to Mexico last year. Personally I love souvenir shopping and it’s really exciting when I can find souvenirs appropriate for my dog. But the presents I brought back from Mexico for Sadie were more meaningful than just any old souvenirs. These particular items came from Humane Society in Mexico, so every tiny sombrero and colorful dog poncho purchased benefits shelter animals throughout Mexico. It’s the best way to shop – fun presents for my dog that help a good cause!

It’s Red Nose Day!

Sadie’s dressed and ready to participate in the festivities for the big event today, Red Nose Day. If you haven’t heard about it, Red Nose Day is an annual charity fundraiser, where participants don red noses and use comedy and laughter to promote awareness and donations for a variety of charities benefitting children in need. Sadie and I did our part by making a small donation and purchasing the official #RedNose Sadie is modeling in these pictures. You can find out more about Red Nose Day at rednoseday.org.

Red Nose Day has certainly brought some smiles and laughter to my house. As you can imagine, convincing a dog to wear a fake nose is no easy task. After some initial sniffing and lots of convincing on my part, I finally got Sadie to keep her #RedNose on for more than two seconds. When I turned away to grab my camera, I expected Sadie to try to get the nose off. I did not expect for Sadie to leap onto my lap instead. The rest of the photo shoot felt like a comedy routine. I would put Sadie on the floor and tell her to sit, but as soon as I clicked the camera, Sadie would run onto my lap. In the end, I was lying on the floor hysterically laughing with the camera in one hand while holding Sadie back with the other, trying to keep her far enough away from my lap for the camera to focus on her face.

Broadway Barks 16

Over the weekend I attended the annual Broadway Barks animal adoption charity event in New York City. This event pairs Broadway stars and celebrities with local animal shelters and charities to help raise funds and promote adoptions. This year there were 27 shelters and charities involved. The event takes place outdoors, so there are lots of dogs, cats, people, and craziness. Handlers walk some of the dogs through the crowds to meet and greet with potential owners, while cats lounge in air conditioned transport vans waiting for potential owners to come to them. Each charity/shelter has a table where you can make a donation, purchase products for sale, and meet some of the adorable animals up for adoption.

If visiting the tables and meeting the volunteers and cuddly critters isn’t enough to draw you into the crowds, there is also the main event that takes place on a stage erected in the middle of Shubert’s Alley: the presentation of the animals. This year the event was hosted by Bernadette Peters (founder of Broadway Barks along with Mary Tyler Moore) and James Franco. A song from the cast of the musical Beautiful kicked off the presentation, complete with an appearance of an adorable puppy available for adoption. From there it was a steady stream of Broadway celebrities talking about adorable adoptable animals. It’s almost like a dating auction, with each celebrity describing the age, breed, gender, likes, dislikes, and history of the animal they are in charge of showing off.

Here are a few of the photos I took during the presentation. Keep in mind that it was really crowded and I’m really short; not a great combo for high quality photos.

This was the 16th year of the Broadway Barks event. Because of  last year’s event, over 200 cats and dogs found forever homes. Hopefully this year was even more successful and many of the amazing animals I met this weekend will soon be living in new homes. You can visit broadwaybarks.com and broadwaycares.com for more information about the event and charity.
