It’s that time of year again – school is back in session. I wanted to share with everyone today a reminder about the possible effects back to school time might have on your pets. Do you have any school-aged children in your home? Are you or other members of your household teachers or work in a school in some other capacity? If the answer is yes, then that means your pets will now have to deal with separation from you or your family members. It’s tough on everyone, humans and pets alike, when you go from spending every day with someone during the Summer to potentially only seeing them at night during the school year. And when pets are bored or sad all day, they may cause some mischief to pass the time.

For instance, if you leave an open school bag unattended on the couch, this may happen:

So check for hitchhikers before you leave for school in the morning.

You might enjoy having your pet tag along on your school day, but your school will probably not agree. Save yourself some trouble and set up a comfortable, secure area at home for your pet to spend the day while you are away. Make sure you leave plenty of food and water and some toys or other forms of entertainment for your pets.

And make sure your home is puppy-proof, regardless of the age of your pet. Even if your pet is older and has never been interested in those shoes on the floor or that remote control on the coffee table, it’s always better to take precautions. Your pets may be upset and decide to lash out at nearby objects to deal with the frustration of suddenly losing their daytime playmate.

So as the school year begins and brings many changes for humans, don’t forget it also changes daily life for your pets. Just be on the lookout for possible mischief and prevent any before it starts.
