Sadie is officially a model now! She is the newest subject of a fabulous watercolor portrait by the artist Ruth Oosterman. I was so excited to get this portrait in the mail last week! Sadie looks beautiful, the colors are brilliant, and I love how the watercolor gives the portrait a whimsical feel. I recently had the opportunity to speak to Ruth about her portrait work. I found it very interesting to hear about animals from an artistic perspective. Read on to find the interview, some beautiful portraits created by Ruth, and a special surprise at the end!

Guardian of the Shoes

Sadie’s taken on a new duty in our house this week – guarding my shoes. I keep the shoes I wear most often on a welcome mat by the door, and Sadie has started lying on the mat to keep an eye on the shoes. I think she likes the position near the door so she can watch whenever someone is coming or going. But I also wonder if she’s trying to keep me in the house. She knows that when I put on shoes it means I’m going out, so maybe she is guarding the shoes so I can’t get to them and leave her. Or maybe she is watching the shoes so that when I go to put them on, she can make sure I take her with me. Sometimes I can’t help but invent all these possible ulterior motives for why my dog is behaving the way she is. But most of the time the simplest answer is probably the truth. Sadie just thought the welcome mat seemed like a welcoming place to sit for a while.

Garage Sale Bait

So a few weeks ago my family had a garage sale. Sadie and I spent most of the day hanging out in front of the house, playing around on the grass or just relaxing, watching all the people come and go. I was very surprised that at least 90% of the people who came to the house stopped first in the front to look at Sadie or talk to me about Sadie. Everyone wanted to tell me how cute she is, or ask what kind of dog she is, or comment on her harness dress. And then most would tell me about what kind of dog they have or had growing up and what that dog is like. I still find it amazing how just having a dog brings all kinds of people together and starts conversations. I was even wondering if having Sadie out front actually made more people stop into our garage sale. Do you think if I use this picture to advertise my next garage sale, more people will show up?

I am constantly taking new pictures of Sadie, and am always excited to find new ways to display my best photos. One of my recent discoveries is CanvasHQ. I was able to turn one of my Sadie photos into a wall-art quality canvas print. This is an 11×14 canvas print of Sadie and I the day we went to the Cherry Blossom festival. Who knew Sadie and I would look so good on canvas?

Summer is in full swing, which means the days are hotter and longer. Most people are spending more time outdoors, which is wonderful for everyone involved, especially your dogs. Now when you get home from work late, there is usually enough light left for a quick walk with your dog. Or maybe you and your furry companion enjoy an evening stroll, when the temperature cools down just enough to be comfortable. Personally I prefer sunset walks with Sadie. But whether you intentionally set out on a nighttime walk, or you stay out longer than expected and lose the light, it is important to be prepared to walk your dog safely after dark. And the key to night walk safety is visibility.
