Like most dogs, Sadie loves to play with plastic water bottles. As a good mommy I make sure to remove the bottle cap and ring so there are no small parts she can choke on. Well, I try to most of the time, but sometimes that ring is just really difficult to remove. But before you get all upset about the dangers of dogs with plastic bottle rings, I need to mention that my dog comes with a built in safety feature which I like to call freeze frame. Whenever Sadie gets the ring partially off a plastic bottle, she has trained herself to freeze like a statue until I check on her. Continue reading

Easter is only a couple of weeks away, so I decided that it’s time to decorate the house. I love Easter decorations with all the cute bunnies and pretty pastel colors. Sadie agreed to help me by guarding the decorations.  Continue reading

This flashback photo shows Sadie, my Yorkipoo, as the stereotypical designer dog.

What is a designer dog?

When some people hear about designer dogs, they picture celebrities’ little pampered pooches, wearing clothes most people can’t afford and snapping and yapping at anyone who comes near them and their owner. But the term designer dog actually has more to do with the animal’s dog parents than with their human parents. Designer dog refers to the offspring of two purebred dogs from different breeds, mated together specifically to produce offspring with a mixture of genetic qualities from each parent. Designer dogs get their breed names from the combination of both purebred parents’ breed names, such as Yorkipoo, a combination of Yorkshire Terrier and Poodle. I’m always trying to think of new tricks I can teach Sadie. When she was little I thought it would be cute if I threw something to her and she would catch it. So I researched different methods and strategies for teaching a dog to catch on command. The most common method is to hold a treat above your dog’s head and then drop it. When your dog opens his or her mouth to eat the treat, say catch so that he or she associates that action with catching. Continue reading

B is for Beg – #atozchallenge

Thanks for liking us! Sadie and I really appreciate all the love!

This photo shows Sadie doing her version of the classic dog command beg. I decided to teach Sadie to beg because I thought it would make a cute addition to her repertoire of tricks. I had a picture in my head of an adorable cartoon dog quietly holding it’s front paws out, sad puppy eyes looking at you imploringly. Unfortunately, so far Sadie’s version of beg happens far too quickly and excitedly. Although I use the beg command, Sadie’s actions more closely resemble a little kid shouting “Gimme! Gimme!” at someone holding their toy too high to reach. Continue reading
