The Treat Trap

Sadie was being rather diabolical the other day with a plot to get some extra treats. We were playing fetch with her favorite squeaky ball and I had her running a path from the living room, through the kitchen, into the hallway, and back. She returned the ball at least five or six times in a row (return for Sadie meaning bringing the ball back to the same room I’m in), but then she disappeared. A minute later I heard her crying from the kitchen. I ran in, expecting to find her ball stuck somewhere out of her reach. Instead I find this scene:

Sadie has carefully placed her ball on the rug in front of the treat cupboard, thus setting the trap. You see Sadie believes that if she can get me near that cabinet, then there is a good chance she’ll get a treat out of it. So she puts her ball right in front of the cabinet and cries wolf until I come running to see what is wrong. Now the first time she does this I assume it’s just a coincidence, that the ball just happened to land on that rug. So I pick it up and throw it on my way back into the living room, resuming our game. But instead of returning the ball to me, Sadie once again takes it into the kitchen and places it in front of the treat cabinet. When I go into the kitchen after her and don’t move toward the ball and treats, Sadie starts crying again, looking from me to the ball to the cabinet. I accuse her of setting a trap to position me in front of the treats and she comes over wagging her tail, then goes and sits next to her ball on the rug. Sadie smiles expectantly up at me, then looks over her shoulder at the still closed cabinet door.

Maybe it was the hopeful smile and puppy dog eyes, or maybe I was just impressed by her craftiness, but either way I eventually gave in and got out a treat for my cunning little girl.

  1. Sadie’s super smart – she knew her game plan all along and was confident in the end result! Like most pet parents (me included) you got played!! I love my notepad stickies from Sadie that I found in the “swag bag” from Wigglebutt Warriors goes to Hollywoof. So cute, and practical. Thanks again.
